The Hackney is a stylish carriage horse breed. A true blood horse with
unbounded courage, full of fire and generous in the extreme, it was used
as a trotting horse by the people of Eastern England for several
centuries. In the 19th century the breed became a popular carriage
horse, and the Hackney Horse Society was Established in 1883. Due to
the development of the motorcar, the Hackney almost became extinct,
but the demand for Hackneys began to grow at the end of World War
II, with the resumption of the annual breed show.
These flamboyant horses with their distinctive spectacular high-stepping knee
action is now used primarily as a carriage show horse, where it is very popular
with spectators.
