DEXTER BULL The use of Dexter bulls in especially Dairy herds in order to produce smaller
and beefier calves by first calve heifers are still popular in some areas this
could promote the sale of Dexter bulls especially now that all bulls need to be
tested for achondroplasia, that had such a negative effect in the past, before
being sold. Dexter bulls also make excellent teaser bulls for all breeds
where A.I. is used because of its low maintenance requirements. The use of
Dexter bulls on first calve heifers are promoted at present especially in breeds
with a history of distokia (difficult calving) |

| DEXTER COW The Dexter is a highly fertile breed that calve at a young age for the first
time. With proper management inter calving periods of about 360 days can
be achieved. Longevity is common amongst Dexter cows. Ease of
calving except with a bull dog calve is very good and should improve with the
elimination of achondroplasia. |
