How to join the Global Appaloosa Village (IRIP)

In the past we have reported back on our negotiations with Mr. Frank Larrabee who is the Chairman of the International Committee of the ApHC.

The good news is of course that our members are now invited (together with Appaloosa breeders from Australia, Brazil and New Zealand) to register our South African bred Appaloosas with the IRIP. This includes any Appaloosa who is registered in our Main Registry. Of course, all AHBSSA registered horses that meet ApHC bloodline requirements are eligible for Re-registration, notIRIP. As far as we know all horses registered in our Main Registry before 2004 qualify. At the 2004 AGM we adopted a motion to allow only out crossing to Thoroughbreds, Arabs and Quarter horses. Only the offspring of these horses that have been registered with our Society since 2005 are eligible for registration with IRIP.

Our inclusion in the international incentive program has many advantages for our Society, our Appaloosas and our members, which I have highlighted in previous articles. The purpose of this article is to simplify the procedure for members wishing to register their Appaloosas with the IRIP. Follow the following directions to register your Appie and become part of the Appaloosa Global Village:

  1. To obtain an Application Form either photocopy the attached form or go to www.appaloosa.com on the Internet. On the "Official Web Site of the Appaloosa Horse Club of America" you will find a section called" Registration". Click on Registration and then on Downloadable forms where you will find the forms for "Application for the International Registration Incentive Program (IRIP)".
  2. The form is self-explanatory.
  3. . Four photographs (front, both sides and rear view) must be included. All photos must be in colour and clearly show any and all markings (including brands and scars) on the head, body and four legs. Write the name of the dam, month, day and year of the foal's birth and sex on the back of each picture. Photographs must be on photo quality paper ( not computer print outs ) and not larger than 4x6 inches (10.2xl5.2cm).
  4. The registration fee for each registration in $50.00. No ApHC Membership is required for IRIP registration.
  5. Complete both sides of the form.
  6. Include a photocopy of the front and back of the original Certificate of Registration issued by our Society.

Send to: The Appaloosa Horse Club, Registration Department, 2720 West Pullman Road, Moscow, ID 83843.

Most of the above is clear when reading the Application Form.

Any questions can be addressed to the ApHC Registration Department at registration@appaloosa.com or telephone calls can be made to The Appaloosa Horse Club in Idaho on 00-1-208-882-5578

Alternatively any member is welcome to call Danie or me. My cell phone number is 0825507095 or e-mail, luciab@icon.co.za Last year in July in correspondence with Mr. Frank Larrabee he clarified some questions I had as follows:

"We have been successful in obtaining VSLGE grant money (United States Livestock Genetic Export) which has enabled us to promote the Appaloosa Horse worldwide. Some of the programs we will promote are the

  1. International Registry Proposal - this is a landmark policy established by the ApHC to be eligible for Int'l ApHC papers whereas the horse must first be registered with it's country of origin. So you can see the program is based on a respect for geographical and societal differences; second, half of the money after expenses returns to the country of origin for use in futurities for the now dual-registered horses,
  2. we are now able to send ApHC judges to major International events-far instance South Africa's National Championships would be such.
  3. We have established a Youth World Championship Show. We have some funds earmarked for that program. Additionally, we have conducted clinics worldwide.
  4. We are engaged in a shipped semen pilot program which is Hearing the funding stage. Appaloosa Associations around the World would receive a list of stallions collected for International shipment and we would be able to gift a breeding to your association."

Already Mr. Larrabee and his wife, Melanie, have confirmed that we can expect a visit from them, that will coincide with our National Show in October.

For this alliance to prosper we need members who are prepared to register horses with the IRIP. Once your Appaloosa has been sent the IRIP papers and has been mated to a regular papered ( i.e. exhibiting a colour pattern ) ApHC registered horse the offspring are eligible for ApHC registration. We trust that all our members will see that taking part in the IRIP program will be beneficial to not only our Society and the Appaloosa breed world wide but each member and the approved Appaloosa of which we are so proud!
