PIGBLUP, a comprehensive
genetic evaluation computer package / programme (to aid the breeder in his decision making
process) was developed during the late 1980s by scientists of the Animal Genetics
and Breeding Unit at the University of New England, Armidale, New South Wales in
Australia. |
PIGBLUP, thus is a tool to calculate Estimated Breeding Values. It divides phenotypic
performance into:
Genetic effects
Environmental effects and
Other effects, thus calculating trends
EBV is the genetic value of an animal as a parent. PIGBULP combines the EBVs into a single Rand Value Index.
| PIGBLUP is a within herd genetic evaluation programme. PIGBLUP furthermore uses information on correlated traits. PIGBLUP was implemented in the South African pig stud industry during 1993/94. Almost all participating Scheme members are receiving PIGBLUP profiles and their EBV lists as frequently as requested. *BLUP Best Linear Unbiased Prediction |
