On-Farm testing

The official phase D (on-farm testing) of the Scheme, forms an integral part of genetic improvement within the National Pig Performance Testing Scheme. On-farm testing involves the testing of boars and gilts, measuring growth rate, ultrasonic back fat
measurement and, where decided upon, feed intake and feed conversion. This procedure is flexible and thus makes provision for group and individual testing. A selection index programme is installed in the PC’s of all participating breeders. This programme enables the breeder to have instant access to selection indices.

An officer(s) of the Institute visits the breeder(s) almost every two months to monitor back fat measurements, testing procedures and to calibrate the weighing and ultrasonic apparatus.

The on-farm tests start on a set day (live mass between 25 and 32kg) and finish on a set day (live mass >86kg and <99,9kg). Breeders must be in possession of a personal computer (minimum 486 PX, but preferably a 586 Pentium) with all the accessories.

Simultaneously on-farm performance date and reproduction data are submitted to INTERGIS (Integrated Registration and Information System). This enables scientists at the Animal Improvement Institute to summarise, verify and prepare the data for the execution of PIGBLUP, which now forms the backbone of on-farm selections and decision making.
