PERSIAN
The Persian sheep which originated in Saudi Arabia is the ideal sheep race for extensive farming
under arid conditions. The Persian has a very high intensity of sexual activity and in contrast with the most other sheep breeds, can mate
throughout the year.
The Persian needs little care, is a light grazer, and has a low water intake. The daily mass gain, during a drought, of Persian ram lambs
were 65 gram per day and according to the Kleiber formula they require 2,78 kg of grazing per 1 kg mass gain. The Persian played an important role in
the establishment of the Dorper breed which started as a cross between the Persian and Dorset Horn. The skin is remarkably thin and tough and is
therefore eminently suitable for the manufacturing of leather goods, such as ladies gloves. The result is that there is a high demand for
persian skins.
Wonderpan Persian Stud performed particularly well at the South African Championships in 1998 by entering six of a possible twelve champions.
They were the SA Junior Champion Ram, SA Reserve Grand Champion Ram, SA Junior Champion Ewe, SA Reserve Junior Champion Ewe, SA Senior Champion Ewe,
SA Grand Champion Ewe.
